Local Favorites: Best Restaurants for Breakfast
We polled Palm Beaches locals to find the most delectable breakfast spots across the county.
Before heading out to explore The Palm Beaches' sun-soaked coastline, world-class cultural attractions and shop-'til-you-drop neighborhoods, fuel up with breakfast at one of these can't-miss eateries. We polled our Facebook group of locals to find their favorite places to start the day in paradise.
Benny's on the Beach
Set on Lake Worth Pier, the iconic Benny's on the Beach offers a seaside breakfast experience that's quintessentially Floridian. Diners peruse the menu to find an array of options ranging from shrimp and grits to chorizo breakfast tacos to seasonal crepes filled with slow-roasted, locally sourced fruit. The #sunrise build-your-own-breakfast is a special treat; start with eggs, pancakes or French toast, then add Instagram-worthy toppings like M&Ms, almond granola, crumbled bacon, even gelato.
Howley's
Whether you're a fan of killer breakfasts or eye-catching art—or both!—you won't be disappointed at Howley's. The walls at this funky West Palm Beach diner, which dates back to 1950, feature a rotating selection of artwork from local talent. The kitchen churns out greasy-spoon staples like corned beef hash and eggs, French toast and Belgian waffles, all made with organic, locally sourced ingredients. For an added buzz, wash down your meal with a mimosa or a bloody Mary. Long wait? Work on your short game at the putting green located just outside the front door.
The Breakfast Shack
The Breakfast Shack in Boynton Beach is a favorite go-to spot for this post's author. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is casual and the menu features hearty dishes like waffles with strawberries and cream, chocolate chip pancakes and smoked salmon omelets. The hardest part? Choosing between buttery grits or home fries with onions to enjoy on the side.
Johan's Joe Swedish Coffee House & Café
Breakfast gets the Nordic treatment at Johan's Joe, a Swedish coffeehouse and café in downtown West Palm Beach. Diners can choose from sumptuous Scandinavian-inspired dishes like pickled herring with roasted fingerling potatoes, Swedish pancakes with berry preserves, and smoked salmon with cream cheese on a croissant. Wash it all down with a hot mug of Swedish coffee, or go for an espresso, cappuccino, iced tea or salted caramel hot chocolate.
The Foxworth Fountain at Delray Shores Pharmacy
Walking into The Foxworth Fountain at Delray Shores Pharmacy is like being transported back to a time when you could saddle up to the soda fountain at an old-fashioned drugstore for an egg cream or an ice-cream float. The breakfast menu offers classics like eggs and waffles, along with modern dishes like avocado toast and acai bowls. To truly indulge, order the biscuit sundae, which features a buttermilk biscuit topped with coffee ice cream, candied bacon, pure maple syrup and fresh whipped cream.
Pelican Restaurant
For breakfast with an Eastern twist, head to Pelican Restaurant in Lake Worth. In addition to crowd-pleasing options like omelets and frittatas, the menu here specializes in Indian fare. Patrons enjoy dishes like Pelican's nihari (eight hour-braised beef shank curry with eggs) and spinach chicken keema (a spicy mix of fresh spinach, ground chicken and curry), which come with fresh naan and home fries. The lassi bar also aims to please, with a choice of a traditional Indian plain, sweet or salty yogurt drink topped with fresh fruit and honey.
Dune Deck Café
In the mood for a scrumptious breakfast and gorgeous ocean views? Look no further than Dune Deck Café in Lantana. As the Atlantic Ocean waves crash onto the beach, patrons enjoy vibrant entrees like lobster eggs benedict, chilled smoked salmon crepes and avocado toast. As Facebook user Erin McClary comments, "The eggs benedict, full bar and views—what more could you want!"
Hobo's
Run by a husband-and-wife team, Hobo's in North Palm Beach serves an extensive menu of omelets, pancakes, French toast and more. Dieters can partake in dishes like the Breakfast Crunch (granola with nonfat yogurt and fresh fruit) or the Low Carb Pileup! (eggs, bacon, sausage and ham), while diners in the mood to stuff themselves can opt for The Belt, which comes with bacon, eggs, lettuce, tomato and mayo on sourdough toast with potatoes or grits on the side.
Nick's Diner
For a dose of nostalgia alongside your bacon and eggs, grab a bite at Nick's Diner in West Palm Beach, where the décor screams '50s with vintage memorabilia, neon signs and a rockin' jukebox. Slide into a cherry-red booth to enjoy tasty breakfast staples like country-fried steak and eggs, challah French toast and the mouthwatering Hangover Deluxe (a homemade biscuit topped with bacon, fried chicken, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and sausage gravy).
The Nook
The kitchen at The Nook in Jupiter churns out decadent breakfast specials like chorizo benedict, pumpkin waffles, coconut French toast and biscuits with bacon-sausage gravy. If you can snag a seat at this locally owned eatery, you'll be welcomed with open arms and before sitting down for an unforgettable meal. As Facebook user Lisa Carroll comments, "All the family works there. They make you feel like family. Great French toast!"
Tom Sawyer's
Coziness and comfort food are in store for diners at Tom Sawyer's in Boca Raton. The wooden accents, exposed rafters and old-timey décor conjure the feeling of being in a quaint country café, and the menu is just as inviting. Hearty meals like Breakfast in a Pot (two buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, eggs and cheese) and the Breakfast Skillet (eggs, home fries and cheese, all served in a single skillet) can be customized with additional meats and veggies, and for a sweet treat, patrons can take home freshly made chocolate chip cookies for dessert.
